Brief History: Most people don't get their happily ever after, though for many life at least starts happy. Even the grimmest of tales seem to have a moment of joy in the start. That wasn't the case of Theresa. She was born at Cassidy Keep in County Mayo, Ireland to Maeve Rourke Cassidy, newly married upon learning of her pregnancy but unable to communicate it to her husband Sean who had left soon after the wedding on a mission for INTERPOL. Though Maeve herself was not powered, Sean Cassidy was better known to other mutants by his code name Banshee. His sonic scream was a valuable power and he felt the need to help the world using it, even if it meant leaving behind his new wife. The problem with being a part of an International Crime Fighting agency is that it makes you enemies and these enemies came after and murdered Maeve. It was then that Tom Cassidy stepped in, cousin of Sean and a definite admirer of Maeve's. He began to take care of young Theresa and when her father returned prepared to tell him about her until Sean attacked him and took off, still unaware of the existence of his child. This left Tom, known to many as "Black" Tom, to raise her as his own.
Tom resolved never to tell Sean about Theresa and instead raised her as his daughter, though she did know he wasn't her father. Theresa believed that her father was dead and that Tom was the one who had saved her. Tom wasn't the most clean character and his illegal activities didn't stop just because he was raising the child. When she was 12 she was sent to boarding school almost as protection for herself. Tom did care about the girl and didn't want his activities to ruin her life. Only a year later, Theresa began to ruin her own life when she began to drink. It was mostly casual for a few years until she found out Tom was arrested. By fifteen the girl was a full-blown alcoholic.
Eventually Tom came back for his 'daughter' taking her from school and, along with Juggernaut, took her out to join in their criminal activities. After a fight with Spiderwoman that the bad guys lost, Black Tom was captured and Theresa fell unconscious. Tom stood up for his ward, explaining her involvement wasn't her fault and finally told the truth about her father, leading them to be reunited. She was turning a new page in her life and settled into life with her real father well. She lived with him and Doctor Moira MacTaggert and grew up quite a lot. Her drinking didn't go away but overall she was happier and even entered into her first relationship.
Relationships and first loves are always hard. The object of Theresa's affections was Jamie Madrox, a mutant known as Multiple Man. His power allowed him to duplicate himself but what she didn't know was that the Jamie she knew was one of such duplicates. Escaped on it's own, the original Multiple Man knew nothing of this duplicate who was falling for Theresa. They had been sent on a mission to search out two members for the New Mutants and grew to care about each other. It ran it's course and the relationship ended, though not without feelings still lingering on Theresa's part, and then the original Jamie reabsorbed the duplicate that Theresa had been with.
After this, Muir Island was attacked by the Shadow King and Theresa, along with other mutants on the Island, became a victim of mind control. Forced to do things she didn't want to, nor never would do, she emerged from the experience hurt and broken. She tried to get out of her funk by going after Tom and Juggernaut in their latest spree and in so doing ran into the X-Force who courted her to join. She did and it helped start the next chapter of her life.
Being on X-Force and working with James Proudstar (Warpath) was something different for her. James worried about her, cared about her. And one day he told her he liked her...and that because of it he was worried about her drinking. She pushed him away as addicts oftentimes do but after awhile of thinking she came back to him to ask him to return with her to her home at Cassidy Keep and help her heal as a person. Eventually he helped convince her to confront Tom about what he'd done to her, taking her and keeping her from her family, leading her down the path of dark...and it was enough to convince her to give up drinking. Even though he was helpful and a great friend, Theresa didn't return James' feelings for her.
Her time in the X-Force helped her grow up. She moved up the ranks, becoming second in command and then eventually leader of the X-Force. It was a different role for her and one she'd never expected to have but she worked it out. Still, when the old leader Domino returned she was more than happy to step back down and just be part of the team again. Leadership wasn't for her. But things were going well for Theresa..which is never a good sign.
As she turned over leadership the group got into a fight with the New Hellions and Theresa was injured in the worst possible way. She was attacked by Feral and he ripped out her vocal cords, leaving her totally powerless. She couldn't speak but she was alive, though even that was hard to deal with. She left the group, trying to retire and just forget about it all. But even suffering isn't as easy as that. Theresa was possessed and able to fly away from her cousin's house. When the possession was over she was unconscious and it was Wade Wilson, known more familiarly as Deadpool, an old partner and on and off flirtation, who took care of things. He took her unconscious body to a group called Watchtower, who used some of Wolverine's blood to heal her. The group was unsavory at best and she was angered at her long time friend over it.
After awhile of thinking, something girls do a lot of, she decided to approach Deadpool for a date. When she showed up his ex-girlfriend, a shape shifter, assumed his form and attacked her. She slapped him and left. She returned to the X-Force but it was gone which only goes to show you can't go back. It's hard for a girl to be a mutant without a team and though she'd tried to join the X-Corps it hadn't worked out. She temporarily teamed up with Cannonball (Sam Guthrie), former X-Force teammate, but even that didn't stick. She eventually settled in and joined up with old friend Jamie Madrox to join his X-Factor Investigations. Things were going well with that until Jamie got drunk and he and Theresa had sex. That in itself would have caused enough drama but he also had a duplicate who had sex with M in the same night. Theresa was hopeful she and Jamie would reignite their old romance but when she found out the truth she was more than just angry. She spent awhile stalking around, doing her best not to lose her cool and hurt someone and then decided to leave...
Why is this character here? After the lastest issue with her new 'team' and having trouble finding where she belongs, Siryn decided to head to the island. It didn't hurt that her father was working there as well.
Side note: Though Theresa is a former alcoholic and does not drink, she's okay with being around alcohol and working as a bartender.
